BUSINESS CASE: SIMPLE AND TRANSPARENT INFRASTRUCTURE MANAGEMENT
A company wanted to implement ISO9001. Amongst the requirements of this standard, we can also find requirements for the management of the infrastructure, the working environment and the measurement equipment. One of the things we came across at the company was their own racking for the storage of metal raw-materials. The racks had been in use for a very long time, but no reliable information was available on their stability and load capacity. The practice of keeping records of inspections of machinery, equipment and measuring instruments in binders has also been established.
The current situation is not systematic – the load-bearing capacity of the racks cannot be relied on /which has an impact on potential hazards in the working environment), the tracking of machines, equipment and measuring devices through binders is too unreliable and unsystematic. A clear, unambiguous and systematic review was needed.
We’ve designed functions for a database, which was built on Microsoft Access by the company’s in-house programmer. All process owners have access to information on the validity of inspections of machinery, equipment and measuring devices at all times. The load-bearing capacity of the racks was duly verified and authentic documents were obtained, which allowed us to define the storage methods and maximum loads per shelf.
